Objective
Get kids moving safely while training visual focus, fast reactions, and body control.
Kids learn to connect colours with movements and respond quickly without stopping the whole group.
Setup
- Kids run in a big circle around the mats.
- Instructor stands in the centre holding coloured cones or pads (Green, Blue, Red, etc.).
- Explain that each colour means a different movement.
Colour Assignments (example)
Green = both hands touch the floor
Blue = sit down, bum on the floor
Red = chest to the floor
(You can choose any three colours you have.)
Drill Breakdown
1. Running in a Circle
Kids begin jogging around the mat in a circle.
Instructor reminds them:
- Keep space
- Don’t overtake dangerously
- Eyes forward
2. Introduce First Colour
Hold up one colour (e.g., Green).
Every time you show it, kids must:
- Stop running
- Perform the movement
- Stand up
- Continue running
Repeat several times until they all understand.
3. Add the Second Colour
Introduce the second colour (e.g., Blue).
Run the drill again with both colours mixed.
Mix frequency:
Green… Blue… Green… Green… Blue…
Keep it random.
4. Add the Third Colour
Now add the final colour (e.g., Red).
This makes the drill much more exciting.
Instructor mixes all three:
Blue → Green → Red → Blue → Red
Increase the speed of the calls as the kids get more confident.
5. Final Round – Fast Switching
Hold colours up quickly or switch between them mid-action.
Kids must stay focused and react instantly.
Keep it short and energetic.
Progressions
- Add running backwards for short bursts.
- Add skipping, high knees, or side-stepping.
Variations
- Use shapes instead of colours.
- Use sound cues (clap = Green movement).
- Use numbers instead of colours for older kids.
Coaching Points
- Keep the pace fast and fun.
- Make movements clear and safe.
- Praise focus and quick reactions.
- Encourage standing up fast and running smoothly.
Safety Rule
Kids must keep space while running.
If anyone falls, all kids must stop and help, then return to the drill.
