Leader of the Pack

Objective

Build confidence and participation by letting kids lead short fitness exercises. Helps with loud counting, discipline, and following instructions.

Setup

Kids stand in a semicircle or lines.

Instructor chooses one child to stand at the front as the Leader.

Drill Breakdown

  1. Instructor chooses the exercise (e.g., 10 jumping jacks).
  2. Leader performs and counts the exercise.
  3. Group copies the Leader.
  4. Rotate Leaders quickly so everyone gets a turn.
  5. Keep pace high and transitions fast.

Progressions

  • Increase reps.
  • Leader performs two exercises back-to-back.
  • Add stance transitions before starting each set.

Variations

  • Silent Leader: group must copy without counting or sound.
  • Mirror Mode: group mirrors the Leader’s movements.
  • Captain’s Choice: Leader chooses the exercise (pre-approved).

Coaching Points

  • Encourage strong counting.
  • Praise confidence, not perfection.
  • Keep rotations fast.
