Objective
Develop quick reactions, sharp listening skills, and self-control by responding to commands while resisting the urge to grab early.
Equipment Needed
One of the following:
- Melons or pads on the floor
- Tennis balls
- Small objects
- Soft grappling-safe pad for advanced version
Setup
Place one object on the floor in front of each pair.
Kids kneel or squat behind their object.
They must wait for the correct command before acting.
Drill Breakdown
1. Start Position
Kids stay in a strong squat or kneeling position.
Hands off the object.
2. Call Body Parts (Control Phase)
Instructor calls: head, knees, shoulders, elbows, floor, back.
Kids touch that body part.
This builds discipline, control, and listening.
3. Strike or Snatch on Command
When instructor says “Strike”, kids strike the pad once.
When instructor says “Go”, kids grab or snatch the object.
First child to react correctly wins the point.
4. Change the Object
Replace pad with a tennis ball or toy for more challenge.
Shorten the delay to increase difficulty.
5. Grappling Version (Advanced)
Use a pad with no handles.
When you say “Go”, kids grab and keep possession for three seconds.
No pushing or hitting. Just control, balance, and grip fighting.
6. Optional Add-Ons
Add squats or star jumps before each round.
Do the drill in teams and track points.
Winners face winners in a final round.
Safety Rule
If a child falls, the others must stop and help. No running around them or stepping over them.
Coaching Points
- Watch closely for early grabbing and reset them with humour.
- Keep commands unpredictable.
